Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout suffered a broken wrist on Monday night, and whether he'll need surgery along with his timetable for return remains up in the air. The three-time AL MVP and 11-time All-Star fouled off a pitch from San Diego’s Nick Martinez in the eighth inning of Monday’s 10-3 loss to the Padres. After immediately shaking his left arm, Angels manager Phil Nevin and a trainer came out to check on the star center fielder and he left the game.Trout, who is hitting .263 with 18 home runs and 44 RBIs, was placed on the 15-day injured list with a broken hamate. He is set to miss his third straight All-Star Game as a result of an injury. “I was really looking forward to it,” he told AP. “It’s frustrating...it’s nothing crazy serious, so obviously I’m going to miss a bit of time, but it’s not season-ending.” 3 Dodgers, 3 Angels elected to All-Star Game Nevin said that the team will get one more medical opinion on Trout’s wrist, but he is being cautious about...Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible Run Begins its Reckoning

Tom Cruise runs! Tom Cruise jumps! Tom Cruise drives a motorcycle off a cliff and then opens his parachute! It’s the Tom Cruise show again this summer, which means it’s time for Ethan Hunt to sprint his way through another ballet of bombast, symphony of spectacle and gamut of endearing greatness. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning (Part One) is the seventh installment in the franchise and as expected, the movie decides to go big instead of going home as the superstar reportedly plans to say goodbye in Part Two.Written and directed by Christopher MacQarrie, the film brings back numerous characters from the previous entries–including Ving Rhames’ expert, Simon Pegg’s comedic relief and Rebecca Furgeson’s hit women. More significantly, he brings back an emphasis on action. The entire reason we go to these movies is to see Cruise pull off death-defying acts that get crazier as the series goes on. The actor himself partakes in many of these stunts, which is ...Letters: BART failure | TB fight | Brazil’s example | Free college | LGBTQ rights | Red states’ media

Yet current and future police expense is one of the largest BART budget line items, and it’s only guaranteed to increase. Keep the police rolling; the trains? Not as important. Transit is essential; BART police are not. When BART opened, it contracted with the cities and counties through which it passed for police services. When BART established its own police department, your property tax didn’t drop. That’s the hook politicians don’t want you to see. The proposed bridge toll hike, scheduled to end in five years, will never end. Never. Politicians’ greed is insatiable. It is unconscionable. There is little accountability with government workers thanks to powerful worker unions that compensate and fire workers on the basis of seniority rather than performance. Rather than do more with less, it’s just easier to ask for more taxpayer money. It certainly doesn’t hurt to also have politically powerful friends in the Legislature.Maybe it’s time to rethink ways to achieve more accountability in our public agencies.Jerry MungaiSan JoseNextdoor undercutslicensed contractorsThe website Nextdoor.com changed its rules allowing businesses to directly submit advertising posts in the general platform.Many...Corpse flower blooms at SF Conservatory of Flowers
