MALDEN — When Luke Fredette first pulled up to a tucked away Rotondi Field, he didn’t truly know what to expect. The Waltham baseball star was set to take the diamond with some of the best players in the state, and there was pressure to perform.Yet, if there truly were any pregame jitters, you would not have known it given how he proceeded to play. Fredette finished 2-for-2, driving in a pair of runs to lead Team West to a 4-1 victory over Team East in the 2023 Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Association’s Junior Select All-Star Game.“I was just looking fastball the whole time,” Fredette said afterward. “Then I just got it. I was looking to put it in play, and it landed in the right spot.”Fredette was named the game’s Most Valuable Player for his efforts, and his squad needed every run he could manufacture. Team East took an early lead in the second inning, as Somerville star Ian Born drove in a run with a fielder’s choice to make it 1-0.Later on in the bottom of the third however, F...Boston City Council’s cut to veterans’ office sparks outcry

The City Council’s decision to cut $900,000 from the veterans’ services budget has prompted an outcry from across the country, council President Ed Flynn said.“I received literally hundreds of calls and texts from residents across Boston, across Massachusetts, and even veterans across the country,” Flynn said. “And they were disappointed in Boston for turning its back on veterans and military families.“As a member of the U.S. Navy for 24 years, I’m embarrassed about that vote. That’s not what the city is about. The city has always supported veterans and military families.”Flynn was among five councilors who voted against the city’s $4.2 billion operating budget on Wednesday. The fallout is still being felt in the cuts to the Boston Police Department, which total nearly $31 million, but outcry to a million-dollar cut that would reduce the veterans department budget by 14% grew equally as fierce on Thursday.“Cutting veterans programs shows the public and our military families tha...MBCA All-Star Game: Juniors blank the sophomores, 7-0

DARTMOUTH — The Taunton Tigers are on the hunt for a three-peat.A dominant pitching performance from Texas Tech commit Samantha Lincoln and timely hitting helped the No. 3 Tigers squeak out a 2-0 victory over Hockomock League rival and No. 2 seed King Philip in a Division 1 softball semifinal. The Tigers split the regular season series 1-1 with the Warriors, and the 1-0 loss on May 22 was the team’s only loss during the regular season. Head coach Michelle Raposo said the setback was needed for her team to stay grounded and energized.“I told the kids earlier in the season that loss was a good loss,” Raposo said. “It humbled us a bit and dialed us in. We weren’t going to let them out-cheer us, and I am so proud of them.”The Tigers earned two baserunners in the top of the first via walks, but King Philip pitcher McCoy Walsh locked in and shut the door. The deadly crash in Manitoba between a bus full of seniors and a semi has brought renewed attention on the safety of numerous so-called at-grade intersections on Canadian highways.BC Trucking Association CEO Dave Earle says most drivers in urban areas where highway intersections have overpasses or traffic lights have no idea about the prevalence of at-grade intersections, in which two routes cross at the same elevation, and that they operate without lights even on major arteries such as the Trans-Canada Highway.Earle says while it isn’t always possible, easy or economically viable to build fully grade-separated interchanges, it would be much safer for all drivers. Police say 15 people were killed and 10 others were hurt in the crash west of Winnipeg at the Trans-Canada Highway’s intersection with Highway 5. The Trans-Canada Highway is almost completely a four-lane route in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, but a large number of its intersections outside of cities are a...Oregon man pleads guilty to hate crimes charges in Idaho
