WASHINGTON (AP) — With a midnight deadline approaching, Congress was working to avert a government shutdown that would disrupt many services, squeeze federal employees and roil politics. The threat of a shutdown was easing Saturday after House approval of a plan to keep agencies open until Nov. 17. The Senate was meeting late in the evening after Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., dropped demands for steep spending cuts and relied on Democratic votes for House passage. House Republicans, fueled by hard-right demands for lower spending, had been forcing a confrontation over federal spending. In a shutdown, some government entities would be exempt — Social Security checks, for example, would still go out — and other functions would be severely curtailed. Federal agencies would cease all actions deemed nonessential, and many of the federal government’s roughly 2 million employees, as well as 2 million active-duty military troops and reservists, would not receive paychecks.A look at what c...Twins manager for a day: Rocco Baldelli turns over reins to Kyle Farmer, Jorge Polanco

DENVER — Kyle Farmer and Jorge Polanco learned they would be unofficially managing the Twins on Saturday at around 3:30 p.m. Twenty minutes later, they were already fulfilling one of Rocco Baldelli’s daily pregame duties: meeting with the media. On the second-to-last day of the regular season, Baldelli handed over the reins to the two veteran infielders. It’s something Baldelli did one other time, too — on the final day of the 2019 season, utilityman Ehire Adrianza managed the Twins.“I think it’s an awesome experience for guys that actually have interest in other parts of the game, which both of these guys do,” Baldelli said. “But we’re also going to treat it as though it’s a Major League Baseball game, because it is.”Though Baldelli wrote out the lineup and the Twins had a number of relievers that needed to get their work in in the planned bullpen game, Baldelli said he planned to talk through all of moves with the two co-managers. As one of their duties, the pair exchanged the line...Minnesota teachers union, advocacy groups warn of ‘extremist’ school board candidates

By Elizabeth Shockman, MPR NewsA coalition of educators, families, students and advocacy groups on Thursday urged Minnesota voters to watch out for “extremist” candidates running for local school board seats this fall.“We are concerned that a toxic national movement is about to sweep into Minnesota school boards, through elections in a dozen key districts, mostly in the suburbs,” Denise Specht, president of the state teachers union Education Minnesota, told reporters. While it’s a relatively slow year for school board elections in Minnesota, competition and spending over open seats in more than 40 districts is heating up. In some districts, as many as 12 candidates are running for three or four open seats, prompting observers to implore voters to make sure they know the views of the candidates before they vote. This year in Roseville, a Holocaust denier has registered to run for one of three open school board seats at a time when, nationwide, antisemitic incidents are at an all-time h...New St. Louis monument dedicated in memory of Dred Scott

BOULDER — USC Trojans star Caleb Williams walked into Folsom Field on Saturday as the Heisman Trophy winner and left the stadium as the second-best quarterback in college football.Shedeur Sanders brought the CU Buffs back from the brink and dared the mighty Trojans to blink in a 48-41 thriller that USC was lucky to survive unbeaten. As a quarterback, there is more than a little Tom Brady, with a sassy dash of Joe Montana, to be seen in Sanders, capable of doing even more amazing football magic than Williams, the presumed top pick in the next NFL draft.Maybe the 30 pro scouts in attendance at the game would argue otherwise. But they would be wrong. When building an NFL team for the future, you can take Williams with the No. 1 pick. My quarterback is Sanders.Doubt my evaluation as crazy, over-the-top optimism?Well, as Deion Sanders, coach of the Buffs and father of their quarterback, has been known to tell naysayers: “Look in the mirror and slap whatever you see.”On Fox’s Big Noon stage,...Latest news
