The Gophers football team had one last chance to salvage the season opener against Nebraska on Thursday. On fourth and 10 with two minutes left, Gophers quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis heaved a pass into the corner of the end zone; receiver Daniel Jackson caught it and somehow dragged his back foot in bounds for the game-tying touchdown. The Gophers were a seven-point betting favorite but couldn’t muster a single touchdown until the game was on the line.On the next drive, Gophers star safety Tyler Nubin intercepted Jeff Sims with a minute remaining. A short drive set up new placekicker Dragan Kesich for a 47-yard game-winning field goal to seal a 13-10 win for the Gophers.Kesich was making his first start as the Gophers placekicker Thursday, and the moment was not too big for him.“He’s made himself into a really good, solid, reliable kicker,” head coach P.J. Fleck said last week. “Now he’s got to go out there and prove it to himself, that he is exactly who he say...

ST. LOUIS – The City of St. Louis has a stop sign issue.FOX 2 has confirmed the city used cardboard-like stop signs as replacements for damaged or stolen signs made of sturdier metal or fiberglass for a short period last year. Hundreds of the flimsy, cardboard-like signs remain in use and are failing. From yield signs and one-way signs to school zone and no parking signs, residents say stop signs are perhaps the most important of all.“I ride my little scooter every day, and I depend on stop signs, yield, bicycle (signs),” Laura Henson, Soulard resident, said. “If you can’t see them, and they’re not going to last, what’s the point? That’s very cheesy, very cheesy. I mean, my gosh!”Residents wonder what the point of stop signs that appear to be made of cardboard is.Alderwoman Cara Spencer (Ward 8) says it’s unacceptable.“It is not an appropriate material for a stop sign,” she said. The flimsier signs now seem to be falling apart across the city. Charges filed against SF city employees for bribery

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Ever since the arrest of San Francisco Public Works director Mohammed Nuru back in 2020, federal prosecutors have been busy weeding out corruption at San Francisco City Hall. Now, San Francisco’s district attorney is doing the same, charging a city employee and a former member of then-mayor Gavin Newsom’s staff with a variety of corruption charges including bribery. Mpox cases increase among SF residents: officials "We have a job to enforce all laws in the city and county of San Francisco regardless of who breaks them," said SF District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. At a news conference Thursday, Jenkins announced felony bribery charges against Lanita Henriquez, the director of San Francisco’s Community Challenge Grant Program, and Rudolph Dwayne Jones, the founder and president of RDJ Enterprises."In this situation, someone was being awarded San Francisco city contracts because he was paying off a city employee. That is illegal and it can't be tolerated in the...

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Mitch Griffis threw for three touchdowns to open his tenure as Wake Forest’s fulltime starting quarterback and help the Demon Deacons beat Elon 37-17 on Thursday night. The fourth-year passer is taking over after the transfer of star Sam Hartman to No. 13 Notre Dame. Griffis had started last year’s opener against VMI in relief of Hartman, then was back in the starting lineup again — this time as the guy positioned for the longer term — a day shy of that anniversary to throw for 329 yards in his second career start. It wasn’t all perfect, namely with throwing an interception returned for a touchdown and taking two sacks when holding the ball too long. “Obviously the games are going to get a lot harder,” Griffis said, adding: “But I think each week I will improve. That’s the goal.”Griffis was accurate during a fast start, throwing for 230 yards on 11-of-14 passing as Wake Forest took a 24-0 halftime lead. That included a 33-yard score o...
