Rockies Journal: Bud Black deserves a better hand than one he was dealt

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 06:07:17 GMT

Bud Black deserves better. He’d never say it, but it’s true.Given a healthy, talented team, Black is a winning manager. He proved it his first two years with the Rockies, getting them to the postseason in 2017 and ’18, the only back-to-back playoff appearances in their lackluster history. The Rockies had a winning road record just three times in their first 30 years, in 2009 under Jim Tracy (41-40) and under Black in ’17 (41-40) and ’18 (44-38). He helped young pitchers such as German Marquez and Kyle Freeland reach their potential. The starters’ ERA in 2018 was 4.17, the second-best in franchise history, trailing only the 2009 rotation (4.10).If owner Dick Monfort and the front office had had the guts, foresight, and skills to add some key players at the trade deadline in ’18, the Rockies would have won the National League West for the first time in franchise history. If they had done things differently following the 2018 season — D.J....

There are more alternatives to reducing blind spots than adjusting or removing the headrest: Roadshow

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 06:07:17 GMT

Q: Your reader referred to the head restraint as a headrest. They are not for comfort, but are an integral part of the restraint system designed to reduce head and neck movement in a collision. Altering the size, or worse, removing it could have serious consequences. She should learn to back up using the three mirrors and camera system installed in most vehicles.Ted Atlas, CampbellA: You’re one of several people concerned about safety issues if a car’s head restraints are changed.Q: Hopefully, when Sue Kayton modified her car’s headrest, she did not increase the risk of whiplash injuries. As for removing headrests on rental cars, this is a bad practice. Even if hit from behind by a slow-moving vehicle, one is still at risk without a headrest. One solution is to increase the viewing area by moving the driver’s seat back as far as possible while still being able to reach the pedals, and moving the passenger seat forward. Also, adjust your mirrors. There are mir...

Damian Lillard has said repeatedly that he wants to contend for a championship. After 11 years in Portland, he has decided he needs to move elsewhere to make that happen.Lillard asked the Trail Blazers for a trade, a move that will end the seven-time All-Star’s tenure with that team, two people familiar with the matter said Saturday.Lillard will generate interest from the Miami Heat and Brooklyn Nets, among others, according to the people who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no details were announced publicly. One of the people told the AP that Lillard’s preference is Miami, though that hardly guarantees the Trail Blazers will work to facilitate that specific move.Lillard is coming off a season in which he averaged 32.2 points for the Trail Blazers. A medida que se acerca el tiempo cálido en primavera y verano, muchos esperan con ansias el tiempo soleado que acompaña a las estaciones. IndyCar driver Simon Pagenaud walks away from a terrifying wreck at Mid-Ohio

IndyCar driver Simon Pagenaud walked away unharmed from a terrifying wreck during practice at Mid-Ohio on Saturday, when his car from Meyer Shank Racing rolled seven times through a gravel trap before coming to rest on its side.Pagenaud told his team over the radio that his breaks had failed, and he was going about 180 mph (290 kph) at the end of a straightway when he tried to make the corner of the road course. The car catapulted through the gravel and into the air, rolling several times as pieces ripped away, before finally coming to a stop with Pagenaud motionless inside. He climbed out as the AMR safety crew rushed to check on him, and the 2016 series champ sat on the gravel by the wreckage to collect himself. Pagenaud then got to his feet and stepped into the medical car for a trip to the track’s care center.“It was a hell of a ride, that’s for sure,” Pagenaud said. “We had something go wrong and I couldn’t slow down. I tried to make the corner anyways. I know that gravel is dea...
